Legal & General Group Plc (LON:LGEN) is a financial services company providing risk, savings and investment management products worldwide. Headquartered in London, it has operations in the United Kingdom, Egypt, France, Germany, Gulf states, India, the Netherlands and the United States.
Legal & General operates in five segments: Investment Management, Protection and Annuities, Savings, US Protection, and Group Capital and Financing.
Investment Management consists of institutional fund management and LGIM America. Protection and Annuities, which consists of individual and group protection, individual and bulk purchase annuities, longevity and general insurance, is also involved in estate agency and the housing related business conducted through its regulated mortgage network. The Savings business includes non-profit investment bonds, non-profit pensions, individual savings account, retail unit trusts and retail platform businesses. US Protection deals with individual protection and universal life contracts. Group Capital and Financing consists of shareholders’ equity supporting the non-profit Protection and Annuities and Savings businesses.
Legal & General has one of the largest investing businesses in the UK, estimated at £413 billion worldwide as of the end of 2012.
It also owns one of the largest estate agency/lettings agency franchise businesses in the UK through its Legal & General Franchising Ltd (LGFL) subsidiary. The businesses are not marketed under the Legal & General brand, but instead operate under four regional brands: CJ Hole; Ellis & Co; Parkers; Whitegates and Michael Evison, which operate over 110 branches nationwide.
Legal & General, founded in 1836, is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
