Old Mutual Plc (LON:OML) is an international long-term savings, investment and protection company.
Old Mutual is a holding company. Its business units include Old Mutual Emerging Markets, Old Mutual Wealth, Nedbank, Mutual & Federal and US Asset Management. In the UK and Europe, the company has developed an open-architecture platform, whereas in the US and South Africa, Old Mutual’s management businesses are based on the multi-boutique model, with each boutique operating independently. As of June 30 2013, the company had £289.3 billion funds under management. The company has over 14 million customers and employs more than 54,000 people.
Old Mutual’s registered office is in London. The company is listed both on the London Stock Exchange and on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. It is a constituent of the FTSE 100 index.
The company was founded in 1845 by John Fairbairn under the name The Mutual Life Assurance Society of the Cape of Good Hope. In 1885, the company changed its name to South Africa Mutual Life Assurance Society while starting to refer to itself as “Old Mutual”. In 1986, the company made its first entry into the UK market with the acquisition of Providence Capital. In 1999, Old Mutual established a head office in London and was listed on the London, Johannesburg, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Namibia stock exchanges.
