Standard Life Plc (LON:SL) is a UK provider of long-term savings and investments with operations across the globe.
Standard Life is a holding company made up of wholly owned and joint venture businesses. The company operates in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The company’s main markets include savings, investments, workplace pensions and employee benefits. Standard Life employs around 8,500 people, with 6,000 in the UK and has over six million customers worldwide.
As Standard Life Investments, the company provides a range of investment products for individual and institutional customers through a number of different investment vehicles.
Standard Life is headquartered in Edinburgh and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. As of June 2013, the company has around 1.5 million individual shareholders in over 50 countries.
Standard Life was founded in Edinburgh in 1825 as The Life Insurance Company of Scotland. The original name was changed to The Standard Life Assurance Company in 1832, and in 1925, the company was reincorporated as a mutual assurance company. In 2004, the company carried out a group-out review, the biggest outcome being the decision to demutualise Standard Life and list on the LSE. In July 2006, the company became Standard Life Plc.
